Hormone Related Malignancies Program

The Hormone Related Malignancies (HRM) Program brings together an outstanding group of basic, clinical and population scientists who have a common interest in cancers of the reproductive tract and endocrine system. 

Scientific Goal

To reduce the incidence and mortality from cancers of the reproductive tract and other tumors of the endocrine system by making basic discoveries that are translated into new diagnostic, preventive, and treatment strategies.

By focusing on different hormone related malignancies, cross-fertilization occurs maximizing the impact of the research in the Program.  For example, a common theme in clinical and laboratory research is the mechanism of development of hormone-independent breast and prostate cancer, and how to treat tumors that are refractory to hormone manipulation.

Program Goal

To stimulate research collaborations between basic and physician scientists and investigators, who bring diverse disciplines to common research problems.

Program Activities

Interactions are facilitated through various Program-supported activities including a weekly seminar series, an annual minisymposium, semi-annual focus group meetings, and clinical conferences. In addition, the Program, working together with the Cancer Center Administration staff, provides an infrastructure for multi-investigator research and training grant applications and for attraction of funds for seed grants and fellowships.

Program Members

The HRM Program is comprised of 35 full and 9 associate members. Members come from seven departments within the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and the Graduate School at UCDHSC and from the VA.  View member list.

Publications

The Hormone Related Malignancies Program produced a total of 97 cancer-related publications from October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2009. Of these, 32 (33%) were inter-programmatic publications; 11 (11%) were intra-programmatic publications; and 13 (13%) were inter-/intra-programmatic. Thus, there were 56 (58%) collaborative publications.
