Colorectal Cancer Screening Promotion

Lung SPORE

Approximately 1100 patients at high-risk for developing lung cancer are surveyed on a yearly basis and asked to submit a sputum sample in an attempt to identify lung cancer markers in sputum.

 

Smoking Harm Reduction

NCI (2003-2006)

Approximately 300 patients were called (150 control and 150 intervention), where 150 intervention participants were delivered four motivational interviews to assess barriers and encourage smoking reduction.  Tailored newsletters and physiological assessments were also a part of the intervention.

 

Prostate Cancer Screening

NCI (2004-2005)

20 minute interviews about prostate cancer screening knowledge and behaviors were delivered to randomly-sampled males.  A sample size of over 8,500 yielded 2,600 completed interviews.

 

SELECT, Low-literacy Informed Consent

(2004-2005)

Approximately 500 males were contacted to be surveyed for on typical versus truncated informed consents to assess comprehension and feasibility.  Three month follow-up interviews were also given to those who completed the baseline interview.

 

SELECT, Assessment of an Informed Consent Decision Guide

A cohort of 150 males from the “Low-literacy Informed Consent” project were mailed different informed consent examples, and then were interviewed via telephone to assess opinions of the mailed information.

A sample of 300 people with first degree relatives with past diagnoses of colorectal cancer was called to complete 20 minute MI interviews about screening knowledge and compliance.

Approximately 700 dog owners were contacted via a tri-modal surveying system that included online, telephone, and mail surveying to assess dog behaviors and cancer details.

Vaccine Policy Collaborative Initiative, mail

Tailored mailings with written questionnaires were mailed to over 4,000 sample members.  Per typical mailed survey reminder protocols, over 14,000 mailings were sent.  All responses on returned questionnaires were double-data entered into a specially-designed project database.

A sampling of participants in the mail portion of the study were administered a short telephone interview to capture responses to select questions in the written questionnaire and encourage full completion of the questionnaire.

More than 15 online surveys have been developed and disseminated per typical online survey reminder protocols to medical doctors to assess various vaccine administration policies.  Vaccine types assessed include influenza, rotavirus, and hepatitis B.  Currently, over 6,500 sample members have been contacted.

40-minute pre- and post- telephone interviews are delivered to newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients who are currently using the services of a patient navigator to assess cancer treatment and symptom management.  A goal of 20 participants is desired.

45-minute pre- and post- telephone interviews are delivered to newly-diagnosed head and neck cancer patients in tandem with counseling calls to assess cancer treatment and symptom management.  A goal of 20 participants is desired.

45-minute pre- and post- telephone interviews are delivered to newly-diagnosed leukemia, lymphoma, GI, prostate, or breast cancer patients over age 65 in tandem with counseling calls to assess cancer treatment and symptom management.  A goal of 20 participants is desired.

Over 1,500 doctors who provide renal care were contacted via typical online survey protocols to assess care for undocumented patients with end stage renal disease.

 

(2007-present)
