What is Menopause?

Menopause is a time in a woman's life when her menstrual period stops permanently because her ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing hormones.

Two Menopause Stages

  • Perimenopause is the beginning of menopause when a woman's hormone levels change and menstrual periods become irregular. This usually occurs sometime after the age of 45.
  • Menopause is the point when a woman has her last menstrual period. After one year without a menstrual period a woman is considered in menopause. This usually occurs sometime after the age of 50.

Menopause is not a disorder and does not always require treatment. However, menopause treatments are available for women who have severe symptoms.
