What is a High-Risk Pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy occurs when there are medical complications affecting either the mother or baby during pregnancy or birth. These complications can include, but are not limited to:

  • Multiple birth – A mother is pregnant with more than one baby at the same time
  • Diabetes
  • Genetic problems found by prenatal diagnosis
  • Premature (early) labor or birth
  • Past problems with miscarriages, premature labor or premature birth
  • Heart conditions affecting the mother or her baby

High-risk pregnancies require extra attention and monitoring throughout the pregnancy and birth process.
