Bone Cancer Treatment at the University of Colorado Cancer Center
Cancers that start in the bone (primary bone cancer) are not the same as cancers that start somewhere else and spread to the bones. Here, we will talk about primary bone cancer. There are three main types:
Osteosarcoma – develops in growing bones, usually in children and young adults ages 10 to 25. About 35 percent of primary bone cancers are osteosarcomas.
Chondrosarcoma – starts in the cartilage-soft connective tissue-usually after age 50. About 26 percent of primary bone cancers are chondrosarcomas.
Ewing’s Sarcoma – begins in nerve tissue in the bone marrow of young people, often after they’ve been treated for another condition with radiation and chemotherapy. About 16 percent of primary bone cancers are Ewing’s Sarcomas.
Two other types of bone cancer, cordoma and malignant fibrous histioscarcoma/fibrosarcoma make up about 8 percent each of primary bone cancer diagnoses. Other rare bone cancers make up the rest.
The American Cancer Society estimates that about 2,370 new cases of bone and joint cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.
We Specialize in Adult Bone Cancer
There are more than 100 different types of cancer. To ensure that we are always leading care at the cutting edge, UCCC has expert teams that each specialize in a small number of different cancer types. Because we are sub-specialized in bone cancers and sarcomas, we have treated the most common and the rarest types of cancer.
We treat adults with bone cancer. If you are looking for bone cancer treatment for a child, please visit The Children’s Hospital’s website. Children’s is part of the University of Colorado Cancer Center.
